The Exploding Whales alternate identity is a reference toĀ the infamous event that occurredĀ on November 12th, 1970 in the city of Florence, Oregon. A 45-foot-long, 8-ton sperm whale washed ashore on the coast. The stateās Highway division had jurisdiction over the beaches and, after consulting with the United States Navy, they decided to 'remove' the whale using dynamite. The hope was thatĀ the explosion would result in small pieces for animals to consume. Instead, the result went down in the history books.Ā
The Eugene Emeralds suited up as the Exploding Whales 6 times in the inaugural 2023 season.Ā The Emeralds worked closely with the city of Florence,Ā its mayor, city council, and other business leaders toĀ create an identity that can be embraced by all.
